National Endowment for the Humanities Grant

We are so excited to announce that Free Verse Project has received a $30,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to fund a collaboration with Arts Without Boundaries Foundation and Second Season. The grant will fund the creation of a series of writers’ residencies at high schools, on reservations, and in juvenile detention centers, and the subsequent public presentation of these young writers’ works in community dialogues.

This is a matching grant, so we are heading into fall ready to throw ourselves into fundraising so we can get started on our work with the kids!

Free Verse starts at Billings JDC and Shelter Care

We taught our first class in Billings last week. Ashley K Warren and Brittani Hissom will be working with the kids at the Billings Juvenile Detention Center and the Billings Shelter Care every other week. We met some amazing young artists on our first visit and we look forward to reading more of their words. One of our JDC students wrote:

The Lord did not make me in the intent of perfection
God created me in His own reflection
He’s given me unending protection
He’s helped me turn my life around in a whole new direction
Listen to my words when I tell you I’ve learned my lesson
Until this day I’ve lived my life in sorrow
Not knowin if I’ll get to see tomorrow
I wonder if my family and friends will follow
As I ask the Lord if His strength I may borrow
I love you mom til the end of time
